In last few years we have seen a large number of cases of suicide by homo-sexual pairs, who were compelled to seek solace in the lap of death due to mental and physical torture inflicted upon them by the self imposed moral police of the society and their respective families. Even the Indian Penal Code contains a law under section 377 which condemns all sexual relationship against the “nature of the Law” ,punishes the convicted up to life imprisonment, imposed in 1860 by the British empire. In the last 149 there has been a mammoth change in the socio-economical and political scenario, but the draconian law continued to undermine the basic values of a free, democratic country who boast herself of unmatched inclusiveness of all minorities. We have reservation for schedule casts and tribe, we have laws for empowerment of minorities and votes are corralled on these very issues but on the contrary we are shamelessly oblivious to the rights and ethos of the sexual-minorities like gays, lesbians and others.
The historical judgment against section 377, once again bolstered our belief in the fairness and inclusiveness of our great nation. As expected there has been a fussilade of attacks from the orthodox Muslim-clergy, Catholic church, Hindu Mahasabha ( At least they are united for once even though to oppose a right cause!) on this judgment but on the other hand there has been a huge sigh of relief and euphoria in the homo-sexual community as this judgment can usher a new India devoid of persecution to the sexual-minorities. It is the triumph of justice fairness and equality and as remarkable as the eradication of evil social customs like “SATI”.
Homo-sexuality has long been considered as an anathema in the society, a subject of ridicule (Ask Karan Johar what is his biggest achievement in Hindi cinema, the answer will be invariably Kanta Bhen) and society has always vehemently rejected these so called disgusting phenomena. Isn’t it a travesty of justice and scathing attack on human right? The moral police should be kept out your bedroom and in a just liberal society people should choose their government, religion and as well as the person whom to love.
